Mood: wheres the wind?
16th September 2007
Mt. Biking: Ruthin
Wind Direction:
Wind Stength: 30-40 mph
Surf / Sea State:
Air Temperature: 10 -15
Sea Temperature:
Weather: Sunny ish
Max Speed:
Distance Covered: 55km (Nautical Miles - unless stated otherwise)

The last merdia marthon of the year at Ruthin.
I knew it was going to be hard as there was 1900m of climbing in the 55km course alone let alone having the sniffles.
I took things steady the first climb proper was a bit of a beast I admit to walking some of it.
I was toying with wimping out and just doing the 25 km course but I was feeling pretty good at the cut off point from the 50 km course so I stuck with doing the 50.

My best bit of the day was first proper big down hill on the grass once I was out of the traffic, the bottom was a bit scary as the brakes had got a bit warm trying to stop myself from ending up in the back of people near the top and they had faded quite a bit and there was a rather large lump that ended up in a lot of air!

Worst bit, two of these the really technical decent The techyness was ok but I cramped up at the wrong point (as if there is a right time to cramp up!) resulting in an exit stage left into the gauze thankfully a soft landing. I'd like to thank the person that unclipped my foot so I could get out from under the bike!

The second bit was a bit of a comedy moment on one of the smaller climbs there were a series of dips full of very sloppy , very smelly wet mud. In hindsight I should of got off and hopped across it but I decided to ride through it I got through 2 or 3 of them ok but then the next one I lost the front wheel SPLAT It was wet it was slimey it was smelly but it was soft

I found this merida really hard work not just because of the amount of climbing but the wind as well, it was 4m sail and wave board wind up on the hills just a lack of water (not that I wanted it to rain) and I was on the bike. Inclines that should of been middle ring had to be done in granny gear and flying down fire roads then getting hit by a huge gust from the side is just a bit scary

Ive done two other merida events at Builth Wells but must say that I found the Ruthin one much more enjoyable with much better facilties (closer to town but still quiet , rugby club clubhouse, and proper hot powerful showers)
